For years I have followed the public records jail docket and I am amazed at the number of repeat arrests for driving under the influence, no driver's license, suspended driver's license and no insurance. In the most recent, there were eight arrests for first DUI, two for second and two for third. The two third DUI arrests did not have a "no DL or suspended DL" charge so they must have had a current driver's license.

The Public Safety Committee of the Ohio House took the first step recently to ban texting while driving. House Bill 415, if approved, would make such activity illegal, and punish it by a fine of up to $150. While we're not in favor of a new law for every driver distraction that comes along, this proposal seems appropriate since many motorists seem to lack common sense.

They're shocked, shocked to discover the Department of Public Safety and Corrections is imposing the extra $15 fee on each license application or renewal, raising the charge to $36.50, without going to the Legislature. State Sen. Joe McPherson, D-Woodworth, wants an attorney general's opinion and, failing that, wants to pass a law. The trouble is that the Legislature has already authorized the increase β€” 17 years ago, in fact.

A Pennsylvania State Police corporal, well known in law enforcement circles as an accident reconstruction expert, has waived his arraignment on charges he was driving drunk on Route 422 before crashing his Honda Accord while off-duty in December. John Quigg Jr., 48, of Wyndmoor, waived his formal arraignment in Montgomery County Court and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf to charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and a careless driving-related traffic violation in connection with a o

ERICA Gedney says she can understand why the state is placing tougher restrictions on driver licenses issued to 16- and 17-year-olds. But the 16-year-old Kingston resident, who recently applied for her learner's permit, is bothered by some of the new limitations, especially the prohibition against junior license holders having more than one non-immediate family passenger under 21 in the vehicle. "It's not really convenient, especially if you want to go somewhere with your friends," she said.

It's just a traffic stop, but police officers screening cars at sobriety checkpoints are in the middle of one of the rawest debates in California, touching on immigration, race, fairness and safety. While DUI checkpoints are seen as a deterrent to drunken driving, they also have become dragnets for catching unlicensed drivers, often poor, undocumented immigrants, according to mostly anecdotal information from checkpoints and police officials. And the penalty for the offense β€” a mandatory 30-day impoun

Jerry Schelle drove drunk for 40 years before he got caught. On his way home from an afternoon barbecue on Oct. 6, 2008, he was fiddling with a malfunctioning ashtray while negotiating a curve on Babcock Boulevard in Billings Heights. He swung wide and crashed into the only thing visible in any direction – an unoccupied car parked at the curb.
